Deep-fried Kool-Aid may be the must-have artery-clogger out west, but at State Fair Meadowlands, that distinction belongs to the buckeye. What is it? A boon to anyone who loves the one-two punch of peanut butter and chocolate.
Candyman Brian Shenkman of Lake Worth, Fla., says he debuted his buckeye at the Ohio State Fair last year, where he sold more than 30,000. Traditional buckeye candies take their name from a poisonous nut belonging to the state tree of Ohio. Small peanut-butter balls that peek out of a chocolate shell, Shenkman’s version is fried in a funnel-cake-like batter.
