When you enter the Long Grove Confectionery ’s production facility, the first thing you notice is the aroma of chocolate.

The 85,000-square-foot building is Buffalo Grove’s answer to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Inside, pretzels, caramels, nuts and other treats roll down conveyor belts, as they journey to a chocolate-covered future. (See video.)

Every once in a while we stumble across something really dark. This is one of those things. Somebody took a turn for the surreal a few years ago and apparently started murdering chocolate rabbits with clothing irons. The things we do for art.

Between blasts of hot air from a hair dryer and a the oppressive glare of a heat lamp, these little chocolate mammals don’t stand a chance. It’s kind of terrifying. What really pushes it over the top is that song looping in the background. We love the mocking ballads of demon children as much as the next guy, but man. That’s freaky.
