The Montevideo School Board got a taste of what may well be called “the chocolate milk wars” Monday night at the regular June board meeting.
The Minneapolis School District recently banned chocolate milk starting this summer, and the Los Angeles School District is banning chocolate milk beginning next fall.
The American Dairy Council has countered with a $500,000 marketing campaign to keep chocolate milk in schools, albeit with a reformulated product that reduces the sugar content.
Montevideo was looking at the possibility of serving chocolate milk five days a week instead of the current two days a week beginning this fall. The proposed change was because of the Montevideo, New London-Spicer and Willmar school districts combining their food service departments. Willmar currently allows chocolate milk five days a week, and the Willmar food service director is overseeing the food program.
